There’s two things, Apple is really good at: 1. Making money and 2. Breaking existing functionality and workflows without informing customers.
We’ve seen this time over time and it is astonishing, Apple doesn’t take more heat from its customers. In OS X e.g., suddenly offline syncing of contacts and calendar data was gone. Users were forced into the insecure and privacy corroding cloud or use workarounds like setting up OS X server software which costs 19,99€. Functionality has returned after a fight, but oh boy was that annoying to deal with and unnecessary in the first place.
So, Apple did it again!
Home Sharing, a feature allowing users to share access to an iTunes library and stream that content to all iOS devices on the same WiFi, has been removed from iOS 8.4 without notice. Apple always misses the opportunity to be upfront about such things and inform users of changes in the release notes, where such things belong. While this is not the end of the world, it leaves users with a broken setup, scratching their head, why the f*** Apple just killed a great feature without telling them.
The Apple Remote.app allows you to control various iTunes libraries residing on OS X. But how do you stream the sound to your iOS device? You can buy Airfoil for your mac and then install the free Airfoil Speakers Touch iOS app (which has not been updated since 2012). This workaround is expensive, annoying to use, but it works.
Provide feedback to Apple!
If you are as annoyed as I am or have another workaround you’d like to share, do let me know in the comments. And as always: make sure to let Apple know that this move was a bad idea by sending them the following text:
I was really looking forward to the iOS 8.4 update. But after installing I discovered, that Home Sharing functionality was just gone. This is unacceptable. Whenever you do kill functionality, please do let users know, what will be missing, when they install a software update. iOS and OS X updates have become a big gamble – you never know what workflow will be broken or what key feature will be missing.
I urge you, to re-implement Home Sharing, since that is extremely useful functionality and I am severely missing it!
Thanks for listening to your customers!
